US President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that American control over Greenland is essential for both US and global security, declaring that there is “no question of stepping back” from the position. Trump said the matter has been discussed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, underlining the strategic importance of the Arctic region amid growing global tensions.
“Peace can be maintained through strength, and the United States is a strong country,” Trump said, reiterating his long-held view that strategic dominance is key to global stability.

Talks with NATO chief, Davos meetings planned
Trump confirmed that he has been in contact with NATO chief Mark Rutte regarding Greenland. He also said he has agreed to hold meetings with various parties during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, where the issue is expected to feature prominently.
In a social media post, Trump shared screenshots of a chat with Rutte, in which the NATO chief praised US actions in Syria and Gaza. Rutte was quoted as saying that Trump’s efforts in Syria were “incredible” and that he would publicly highlight US work related to Gaza and Ukraine during the Davos meetings. Rutte also expressed interest in meeting Trump and “finding a way forward” on Greenland.
Invitation to Putin for Gaza Peace Board
Trump also confirmed that he has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join a proposed Gaza Peace Board. Sources said Trump may formally announce the list of members of the Gaza peace initiative during the Davos summit.
Sharp criticism of UK over Diego Garcia
In a related development, Trump strongly criticised Britain’s decision to return the Diego Garcia island to Mauritius, calling the move “foolish” and dangerous for Western security interests.
Diego Garcia hosts a major US naval and bomber base, which Trump described as critical to American military operations. In a social media post, he said the decision highlighted why the United States needs firm control over strategically vital territories such as Greenland.
“It is shocking that our great NATO ally, the UK, is planning to hand over Diego Garcia — home to a crucial US military base — to Mauritius without any valid reason,” Trump said, adding that China and Russia have taken note of such weaknesses.
Why Greenland matters to the US
Greenland hosts a key US military base and plays a central role in missile defence, early-warning systems and Arctic surveillance. Its strategic location makes it vital for monitoring activities across the Arctic, North Atlantic and polar airspace.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s importance has grown as global powers expand their military and economic footprint in the Arctic region.
Davos focus on Greenland
Trump is scheduled to participate in high-level meetings in Davos on Wednesday and Thursday, where Greenland is expected to be a major point of discussion. European leaders are also set to hold consultations on the issue ahead of Trump’s participation.
Officials said the developments are being closely watched, with Greenland fast emerging as a key flashpoint in global security and diplomatic discourse.
