A 20-year-old Lucknow youth allegedly killed his mother after she caught him stealing jewellery to cover debts incurred from his growing addiction to the online game Aviator. The accused, Nikhil Yadav, also known as Golu, first tried to make the incident appear as a burglary, but police later arrested him and he confessed to the crime.

Incident Details

On October 3, after returning from his maternal uncle’s house, Nikhil attempted to steal jewellery from his home again. When his mother caught him, he allegedly attacked her in a fit of rage, first with a screwdriver and then by smashing her head with a gas cylinder, resulting in her death.

Police sources revealed that Nikhil had previously stolen jewellery from his mother to repay earlier debts.

Attempt to Stage the Crime

After the murder, Nikhil reportedly tried to stage the scene as a robbery. He packed the stolen jewellery and the weapon in a bag, fled on his father’s motorcycle, and switched off his phone. He even called his father, Ramesh Yadav, claiming that unknown attackers had struck, but he had managed to escape.

Ramesh Yadav returned home to find the house ransacked and his wife gravely injured. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Initially, Ramesh told the police that burglars were responsible for the attack, estimating losses of Rs 5-6 lakh in jewellery and valuables.

Police Action and Arrest

Following CCTV footage analysis, suspicion turned toward Nikhil. Post-mortem reports confirmed multiple injuries on the victim’s body, consistent with police accounts. Nikhil was later tracked and arrested from Fatehpur district. Police recovered the stolen jewellery, his mobile phone, and the screwdriver used in the attack.

PGI police station SHO said, “Nikhil, an undergraduate student, has confessed to the crime.” He was produced before the court and sent to judicial custody.
